Abstract:

This study examines the historical change and transformation of the argument from design and purpose within the philosophy of religion. It begins by clarifying how the teleological argument has been framed in relation to order, purpose, chance and randomness, and then evaluates selected approaches that have shaped the debate from antiquity to modern thought. The discussion first considers the classical formulation of the argument in the Western tradition, especially the idea that the harmony and purposiveness observed in the universe point to an intelligent cause. It then turns to modern challenges and reformulations, including mechanistic explanations of nature, evolutionary accounts of life, the anthropic principle, fine-tuning and intelligent design. By comparing supportive and critical positions, the article shows that the teleological argument has not remained a fixed proof, but has been repeatedly reinterpreted in response to philosophical and scientific developments. The conclusion highlights the continuing significance of the debate for questions concerning God, nature, life and meaning.
